Vellum Architects

Vellum Architecture + Design is an award-winning firm based in Asheville, North Carolina, working in modern residential, luxury resort and commercial design. The practice describes its approach as Native Modern: modern design principles merged with the distinct characteristics of each place, so that buildings respond to the land, geography and culture of a given site rather than being imposed on it.

The firm states that it was founded on the belief that good design is revealed rather than imposed, and that its work is intended to honour and amplify its surroundings. The studio's portfolio spans custom mountain residences, multi-generational homes, hospitality and commercial work, largely in and around Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains, with additional projects in Snowmass Village, Colorado, and Tuscany.

Documented projects include the Daingerfield Residences at Westglow, Elk Mountain Ridge, Webb Cove, Windcliff, Chauncey Circle, the Viksnins residence in The Ramble, Ventana Ridge, Gordon, Pine Crest, Edgewood Creek, Pines Terrace, Terrace Drive, Two Creeks, Haven, Beaverbrook, Tobacco Grove, Kirby Mountain, Shorebrook Lane and Campo al Doccio.

The firm also publishes guidance on topics such as building costs for luxury modern homes in the Asheville area, mass timber construction, sustainability and designing on challenging topography. Vellum's team is led by principal architect Mark Rudolf, with interiors director Naomi Ferrara, architect Brandon Stancil, project manager Ryan Taylor and interior designer and marketing manager Katie Szabo.

The firm works from its studio at 231 South Liberty Street in Asheville and has expanded into the Charlotte market, where architects based locally serve residential and hospitality clients across the metro area, Mecklenburg County, Lake Norman and surrounding communities.
